Fluke Fishing on Long Island

Half-day party-boat drifts for summer flounder — twice a day out of Point Lookout. Rod, reel, terminal tackle and bait included on every ticket.

The south-shore fluke bite

Summer flounder — fluke — is the bread-and-butter half-day trip on Long Island's south shore. From late May into early October the Super Hawk drifts the reefs, humps and channel edges off Point Lookout, Jones Inlet and East Rockaway where keeper-size fluke stack up on structure.

Our captain has been reading these bottom edges for 37 seasons. Each trip he picks the drift that's producing that morning — inside the bays on light wind days, outside on the reefs when the tide is right — so you're always fishing water that's holding fish.

What to expect on a fluke trip

  • Half-day trip — sail at 7 AM or 1 PM out of 1501 Lido Blvd, Point Lookout.
  • Drift-and-bounce fishing — you let out line, feel the bottom, wait for the tap.
  • Bait supplied — spearing, squid strips, and gulp on request.
  • Rod, reel and terminal tackle included — free rentals, no fee.
  • Crew helps first-timers rig, bait, cast and unhook — great trip for kids.
  • Keepers cleaned and filleted at the dock (tip-based).

Tips from the crew

Bucktail + teaser — a 2–4 oz white bucktail with a pink or chartreuse teaser above it out-fishes a plain bait rig on most days. Bring a small assortment if you're gearing up.

Fish the tide, not the clock — moving water triggers the bite. On a slack tide the drift dies; when the current picks up, get ready. The crew calls it out.

Keep the bait moving — a slow lift-and-drop keeps the bucktail in the strike zone. Dead-sticking on the bottom catches sea robins and skates, not keepers.

Fluke FAQs

Long Island fluke fishing questions

  • When is the best time for fluke fishing on Long Island?

New York's summer flounder (fluke) season typically runs early May through early October. Peak inshore bite on the south shore is late June through August, with keeper-size fluke holding on the reefs, humps and channel edges we drift.

  • What's the size and bag limit for fluke in New York?

NY fluke regulations change yearly — the current season, minimum size and per-angler bag limit are posted on the NYSDEC site and covered by the crew before every drift. On the Super Hawk you fish under the vessel's party-boat permit; no personal license required.

  • Do I need my own fluke rod and rig?

No. Every ticket on the Super Hawk includes a rod, reel, terminal tackle and bait. Bring your own bucktails and gulp if you prefer — bucktail + teaser is a proven combo on south-shore fluke.

  • How much is a Long Island fluke trip?

Half-day fluke sailings run twice a day. Call (516) 607-3004 for current pricing — the sailing schedule on the homepage lists which days are running fluke-focused trips.
